about

The family of Hugh and Mary MacKinnon departs the Isle of Barra, in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, in 1817 and journeys across the North Atlantic to Cape Breton Island. There is sadness that comes with leaving friends and family. There is hardship that comes with the voyage. Eventually, after weeks at sea, the immigrants experience the first sight of their promised land of milk and honey. This movement builds its themes from two Gaelic songs, “The Island Sheiling Song” and “Ships at Sea.”
